"I love creating art that encourages people to stop, slow down and enjoy the beauty, detail and colour that I see in the world around us..." Catherine Hamilton-Jones
2024 - The Nundah Festival Art Competition and Exhibition About Me I am an Australian visual artist. Born and raised in Brisbane (Meanjin), the capital of Queensland, the Sunshine State. I currently live in Stafford Heights and create from my home studio space. I have always been drawn to art and all things creative.
From a very early age, I had dreams of pursuing a career in the visual arts. I have a clear memory of telling my Kindergarten teacher that I would be an artist when I grew up. I was one of those children who was constantly drawing, painting or trying new crafts. As the youngest of four children, painting and creating art was my point of difference from my siblings. It quickly became my special outlet and absorbed a great deal of my spare time.
Somehow, at some point my grand plan for an art career went off track. After finishing high school, I dove into studies in fashion and interior design. Despite helping me to develop artistically, these disciplines were not quite the right fit and the creative urge gradually faded. I spent several years in vocational wandering and pursuing further education, trying to find the right niche. In 2005, I enrolled in a painting course at the Brisbane Institute of Art, and rediscovered my passion for visual art. I have now come full circle and returned to the occupation I enjoy the most, painting full time.
As a visual artist, some of my key inspirations are the vivid colours, wide horizons, refreshing ocean vistas and unique landscapes found in Australia. I feel fortunate to have grown up in the sunny city of Brisbane, conveniently located between the Gold and Sunshine coast regions. Living here gives me access to some stunning and varied subject matter to work from. Like most Iphone users, I am a keen photographer and take many reference photos each week. From these resources I create compositions that best reflect my experience of a particular time or place. Through my artworks I try to convey my appreciation for the view that inspired me, using clarity of colour, contrasts in light and shadow and careful attention to detail.
Overall, the goal of my work is to share what I see and provide the viewer with an opportunity for enjoyment and reflection. I hope my art encourages people to take some time out in a busy world and connect with the beauty around them.
