"My key inspirations are the vivid colours, wide horizons and beautiful ocean vistas found in Austalian Landscapes..." Catherine Hamilton-Jones
About Me I am an Australian visual artist. Born and raised in Brisbane (Meanjin), the capital of Queensland, the Sunshine State. I currently live in Stafford Heights in Brisbane and create from my home studio space. I have long been interested in all things creative.
From an early age, I had dreams of pursuing a career in the visual arts. I was one of those children who was constantly drawing or painting. Always involved in new artistic projects, I also tried my hand at a wide range of crafts. As the youngest of four children, painting and creating art was my point of difference from my siblings. It quickly became my special outlet and provided a ready escape from the stresses of everyday life.
After finishing high school, I dove into studies in fashion and interior design. Despite helping me to develop artistically, these disciplines were not quite the right fit. I then spent several years in vocational wandering and further education, trying to find the right niche. In 2005, I enrolled in a painting course at the Brisbane Institute of Art, and rediscovered my passion for visual art. I have now come full circle and returned to the occupation I enjoy the most, painting full time.
As a visual artist, one of my key inspirations are the vivid colours, quality of light, wide horizons and refreshing ocean vistas found along our Queensland Coastlines. I feel very fortunate to have grown up in the sunny city of Brisbane that is conveniently located between the Gold and Sunshine coast regions. Living here gives me access to some stunning and varied subject matter to work from. I often draw inspiration from the long walks I enjoy taking along the beach, enjoying the tranquility and relaxation of the surrounding landscape.
I am a keen photographer and take many reference photos during my visits to the coast. When I return to my studio, I sometimes spend hours immersed in studying the images. From these resources I create compositions that best reflect and evoke the experience of visiting these special places. I am often told that my paintings remind collectors of a favourite place or holiday memory. Some say they feel as if they could almost step into the painting to be in that special moment.
I also enjoy the way a painting can introduce a feeling of depth to a room and give it a feeling of being larger than it actually is. With each of my compositions I aim to convey the essence of my inspiration and achieve this effect using clarity of colour, contrasts in light and shadow and careful attention to detail.
Overall, the goal of my work is to provide the viewer with a feeling of peace and the opportunity for enjoyment and reflection. Perhaps they will also experience a sense of recognition and ultimately a temporary escape from the everyday.
